Its name comes from the French word merle, meaning “blackbird,” likely inspired by its deep color and the birds that favored its ripe fruit. Merlot is beloved for its plush, fruit-forward character and soft tannins, which make it approachable on its own and a perfect partner for Cabernet Sauvignon. When blended, Merlot’s round, juicy fruit helps balance the firm structure and tannin of Cabernet, creating a beautifully layered wine.
